The National Observatory on Domestic Violence enjoys the patronage of the Ministry of the Interior. It is supported and sponsored by the Veneto Region Department for Human Rights and Department of Health and has been approved by the Ministry of Justice given to the Inter-Agency Committee
The ONVD - National Observatory on Domestic Violence - was established in 2006 as a result of a collaboration agreement between the National Epidemiology Centre on the health and safety situation in the living environment of ISPESL (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) and the University of Verona in order to carry out studies, research, epidemiological investigations on the phenomenon of domestic violence. Since its establishment, the aims of the Observatory have focused on a scientific activity to have a systematic survey of the phenomenon, on a careful evaluation of the data through the elaboration of methodologically set models, on the identification of specific interventions and programs collaboration and on training and information. The ONVD enjoys the patronage of the Ministry of the Interior, is supported and financed by the Veneto Region, Department for Human Rights and the Department of Health and has been approved by the Ministry of Justice granted to the Inter-agency Committee. The ONVD is located in the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Legal Medicine Section, in the University of Verona. Scientific Head of the Observatory is Prof. Marina Bacciconi.
Not only research
The ONVD is not only an acronym that certifies what has been studied, analyzed and written, but it's especially a group of people that have succeeded in giving meaning to their study through determination, perseverance and sometimes suffering. They work together sharing victories and defeats, understanding each other and discussing. In the acronym of ONVD there are thousand eyes, several perceptions, different skills crossing every knowledge with the respect for others. A strong incentive certainly comes from the developing interest to the phenomenon of family violence, due to the lack of general information and therefore the difficulty of the critical reading for the most "extreme" aspects of violence (partner, child, parent killing etc. . ). We live in a rapidly changing cultural and social reality, we find ourselves “stuck at a crossroads”: on one side there are "old" values and outdated "hierarchies" while on the other side everything is yet to be built and organized since very little makes sense. Although in different forms and with other connotations, for sure family violence exists since human beings exist, and it's perhaps a constitutive part of the aching appearance of humankind.
Domestic violence is among the leading causes of death worldwide
Domestic violence, which also has a categorical definition in the WHO guidelines, doesn't receive the same attention in the concrete health acts, in contrast to what happens for work accident and street accident. These other two phenomena belong to that epidemiological field that has to deal with the fundamental rights of the citizens, with the actual organization of a company, its level of modernity in culture and structures, more than with viruses, bacteria or genetic modifications. But put together they are certainly diseases and causes of death much more significant than any other object of medical intervention.
